Building on the duo’s previous success - modernising Sunspel’s iconic Riviera Polo Shirt - this new collaboration takes an iconic heritage design and reimagines it for today’s discerning wardrobe.
The Aran sweater, a staple of effortless cool once donned by legends like Steve McQueen and Robert Redford, has a history steeped in rugged tradition. However, its coarse texture has often rendered it more admirable than wearable. Hranek, an aficionado of classic style, knows this struggle all too well.
“Some of my favourite style icons have worn Aran sweaters,” he says, however, “I’ve collected vintage ones but they’re just unbearable to wear. They’re too scratchy. So for this we wanted to re-envision that classic style in Sunspel’s beautifully soft British wool.”
Crafted from the finest Geelong lambswool, the sweater offers unparalleled comfort and luxury. The wool is sourced from one of Scotland’s oldest spinners, located on the tranquil banks of Loch Leven.
Each sweater is meticulously constructed by skilled artisans in Dumfriesshire, using specialised knitting machines that can replicate the intricate Aran patterns. Every detail is hand-finished, and the sweater undergoes a unique washing process using soft Scottish water, which transforms the fibres into a silky, wearable masterpiece.
David Telfer, Sunspel’s Creative Director, describes the piece as a reflection of the brand’s values. “Sunspel has always been committed to comfort, British manufacturing and timeless design, and this piece captures all of those. Working with Matt, we have reinvented the Aran Jumper using the finest fibres and specialist craftspeople, turning it into a luxurious contemporary piece.”
